Hand Laying

Macadams (Tarmac) should always be laid and rolled when hot.

The temperature of manufacture will depend on the type of binder used. The harder the bitumen (lower the penetration number) the hotter the material will have to be manufactured in order to achieve workability, so the surfacing contractor can lay the material.

It is also very important to compact and roll the material at the correct temperature.

If this is not achieved the material will break up and fail.

Tarmac can be laid throughout the year, different weather conditions require different laying techniques.
